Fumigation is widespread in many countries and has an ancient tradition. In the past, incense was used for ritual purposes. These include: embalming the body with fragrances for solemn church masses or for cleaning houses. During incense burning, various parts of plants, such as tree resins, are burned, releasing the fragrances contained in the resin. Each fragrance has a positive or negative effect on people. We find the scents emanating from incense very pleasant and relaxing.
The composition of the various incense resins is recruited from a compilation of the most popular varieties. The very different scents range from sweet to spicy to tart.
Where does the incense come into its own or where is it used?
The tradition of burning incense mainly comes into its own during the cold and dark season. Our ancestors used certain incenses with herbs or resins on all important occasions throughout the year.
These included personal occasions such as birthdays, annual national festivals, marriage or death. For this ritual, they sprinkled dried herbs and incense on a glowing coal and carried the fragrant smoke through the house or homestead. With this ceremony, people at the time believed that burning incense protected them from illness and evil demons. The most important days for the ceremony are Christmas Eve - New Year's Eve - and the night before the feast of the Three Kings.
What is the effect of burning incense?
There are differences between aromatherapy and incense burning. In aromatherapy, the essential oils evaporate, whereas in incense burning, the incense slowly smoulders. The fire acts as a kind of mediator in incense burning. Due to the fire, the coarse plant components are converted into smoke.
This then transfers the essence of the plants to a subtle level. Via the mucous membranes in the nose, the active ingredients released from the plants travel virtually uncensored directly to the limbic system, the oldest part of our brain, which is responsible for processing instincts and emotions and controls vital functions such as hormone balance and stress behavior.Luxflair offers copal, myrrh and frankincense as incense.
