A time for rituals and reflection
The Rough Nights are a very special time. The 12 nights between Christmas and Epiphany stand for cleansing, letting go and new beginnings. During this time, it is important to realize what went well in the past year and what can be done better. This time should be used to think about goals for the new year and perform rituals such as fumigating rooms with incense or burning incense to help you prepare for positive changes.
The Rough Nights - what is it actually?
The Rough Nights are a time of silence and reflection - a welcome break from stressful everyday life. Many people use this time to strengthen their spiritual power and gain new perspectives. Many spiritual celebrations and rituals take place during the Rauhnächte, giving people the opportunity to connect with the divine.
Some examples of traditional Rauhnacht rituals include preparing a meal for family or friends, reading spiritual scriptures or burning incense in the home. Many people also take the opportunity to get to know themselves better and reflect on their goals.
When do the Rauhnächte take place? Also known in some regions as the "Unternights", they take place from December 24 to January 6 and are therefore 12 days long. During this time, people should protect themselves particularly well from evil spirits, as they are said to be more prevalent. Some people say that Rauhnächte are something like an Otherworld and that the doors to the future are opened during this time. In the past, all fires were extinguished at midnight on the night of January 5-6 and new ones lit so that evil spirits could not gain access.
Of course, this is no longer possible in our modern world. But perhaps there are still a few things you can do to protect yourself particularly well from evil spirits at this time of year?
Where does the name Rauhnächte come from?
The name Rauhnächte comes from Old High German and means something like "rough nights". This name reflects the harsh and uncomfortable weather at this time of year, when storms and snowfall are common. In earlier times, this time of year was therefore also associated with a feeling of fear and unease.
What rituals and reflections are there during the Rough Nights?
Incense sticks and incense are a very popular means of cleansing and strengthening your own aura during the Nights of Smoke. They are either lit in a censer or directly on a piece of charcoal and can be spread around the rooms in which you are currently staying. There are many different herbs and spices that can be used for smoke night rituals, but some of the most popular are sandalwood, patchouli, myrrh, sage and lavender.
Meditations are also very popular during the Rauhnächte. They serve to calm and relax the mind. There are many different types of meditation that can be practiced during the Rauhnächte. Some people prefer to simply sit quietly and take in their surroundings, while others prefer to meditate with their eyes closed and concentrate on their breathing.
